Copenhagen Fashion Week is Redefining the Runway

Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) has carved a unique identity for its stance of sustainability. As the only fashion week globally with mandatory environmental standards for its participants, CPHFW is challenging the fashion industry to redefine its values.

Rather than facing solely on aesthetics, this biannual event prioritises responsibility. There is stringent criteria for participating brands in order to ensure minimal environmental impact, with everything from material sourcing to working conditions.

At the heart of this transformatino is Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of CPHFW, whose vision is changing what fashion weeks can achieve. Her decision to implement mandatory sustainability standards reflects a mindset that fashion has an obligation to do better. The standards, which are reviewed by an independent committee, strike a balance between ambition and fairness. Larger brands are expected to lead by example, but smaller or emerging labels are evaluated based on their capacity which ensures inclusivity whilst maintaining accountability.

The impact of these measures is already visible. From collections crafted using deadstock fabrics to innovative energy-saving production techniques, participating brands are showcasing the possibilities of sustainable design. Yet, for many, the process of adapting to these standards has been as challenging as it is rewarding.

The influence of CPHFW extends far beyond its Nordic borders. In recent years, other fashion weeks have started adopting similar standards. Norway’s Oslo Runway was one of the first to follow suit, and Berlin Fashion Week is set to implement its own sustainability requirements by 2026.

Despite this momentum, critics argue whether traditional fashion weeks are still relevant in today’s digital-first world. Thorsmark counters this by pointing to the unique role they play as platforms for creativity and collaboration.

While much work remains to be done, CPHFW’s success demonstrates that progress doesn’t have to come at the expense of creativity or beauty.
