Good morning 2025! As we dive into the season of New Year’s resolutions, why not make one for your closet? A well-rounded capsule wardrobe includes a mix of basics and standout staples (standout doesn’t mean wearing it once, btw.) Here’s a detailed guide to 10 essentials, with my personal recommendations.
- The perfect white t-shirt. Now this is a must-have in anyone’s wardrobe. And it’s a such an easy sustainable find! I recommend stealing one from your older brother or one of your best friends. You can try a charity shop too. I suggest two: one with a slightly oversized, boxy fit, and a tighter, baby tee style. For the latter, have a look in the kid’s section!
- A black tank top. This is your wardrobe’s stealthy workhorse. Whether it’s ribbed or smooth cotton, a black tank top layers beautifully or stands alone. Again, you can check second-hand stores for vintage cuts, or if you’re feeling adventurous, trry sewing your own! Check out this tutorial.
- Tailored trousers in a deep navy. These are the perfect balance between polished and wearable. Got an interview? Got a dinner party? It works for both. Opt for deadstock or vintage finds to reduce waste (I recommend Vinted), or explore brands like Eileen Fisher.
- A trusty crewneck. This is the perfect cosy, versatile piece your capsule wardrobe needs. You can find a cool graphic one at a vintage store, or brands like Pangaia are great high-quality options!
- Straight-leg jeans. This is technically two, but I recommend one pair of dark one pair of light wash jeans. I am 100% confident in saying that these are the only jeans you’ll ever need. Even better if one’s a ‘low-rise baggy’, and the other a ‘high-rise flare.’
- Two slim-fit sweaters. Lightweight and versatile, pick one in cream and one in your favourite colour. Perfect for layering, it’s a year-round stable. For a more sustainable choice, look for organic cashmere, merino wool or recycled blends from brands like Reformation.
- A black mini skirt with a subtle detail. This is endlessly versatile, but a front slit or wrap style might make it just the right amount of ‘different’.
- A versatile knit dress. In a neutral tone. Think charcoal, taupe, or cream. This piece works well across seasons, and a midi-length with a fitted silhouette would ensure it’s both flattering and practical. I’ve recently learned of a brand named Sezane, why don’t you have a look?
- A timeless trench coat. In brown or grey, preferably. This would wonderfully pull your wardrobe together. You can look for details like removable belts or contrast stiching to make it unique while still remaining timeless.
- Now this is technically more than one, but I have four pairs of essential shoes. First, trusty white sneakers are non-negotiable for everyday wear. Next, a pair of brown boots for transitional weather or fun outings. I’m thinking a cowboy boot, or maybe you’re willing to try out the biker style? A pair of black heels are a necessity for formal occasions, and a fun fair pair of statement heels in red or cheetah print is the perfect amount of personality. Consider Veja for sneakers or Nisolo for boots.
Each of these pieces have been carefully chosen to be as functional and versatile as it is stylish. My final recommendation, that unfortuntately didn’t make the list, is a collection of statement jewelry. It’s a no-brainer, a fun pair of earrings can completely elevate a look. But jewelry is a product which has been largely dominated by fast fashion. So, those charity shops and reselling websites are your best bets. Let’s hope 2025 is your year of consumer sustainability. For yourself, and for the world.
